Saffron Supplement Benefits: What Saffron Does, Dose, and Side Effects
Mod your mood, one read at a time.Science-backed insights to support your brain, lift your mood, and give you the tools to have your best days ever.
A saffron supplement delivers a concentrated, standardized extract of the saffron flower, Crocus sativus. Its best-researched benefits are for mood, stress, and anxiety, with good evidence for sleep and PMS as well. The research consistently uses 28 to 30mg of standardized extract a day, taken daily for 4 to 12 weeks, and saffron at that dose is well tolerated.
Saffron has moved from the spice rack to one of the fastest-growing supplements in the US. This guide covers what saffron is, the benefits the research actually supports, how much to take, how long it takes to work, side effects, and how to choose a saffron supplement that is built on the science.
What is saffron?
Saffron is the dried red stigma of the Crocus sativus flower. Each flower produces just three threads, harvested by hand, which is why saffron is the most expensive spice in the world. It has been used for thousands of years in Persian, Indian, and Mediterranean cooking and traditional medicine.
Saffron's color, taste, and aroma come from three natural compounds: crocins (the golden color), picrocrocin (the slightly bitter taste), and safranal (the honey-like aroma). Crocins and safranal are also the compounds researchers point to when they study saffron for mood. Crocins and crocetin are carotenoids, the same family of plant pigments as beta-carotene.
What is a saffron supplement?
A saffron supplement concentrates those compounds into a measured dose. The best ones use a standardized extract, meaning every serving is tested to contain the same amount of active compounds. That is what the clinical trials used, and it is what separates a real dose from a pinch of spice.
Two branded extracts dominate the research:
- Affron®, studied at 28 to 30mg a day for mood, stress, anxiety, and sleep. See what is Affron®.
- Satiereal®, studied at about 176mg a day for snacking and satiety.
Saffron supplements come as capsules, drinks, gummies, and tea. The format matters less than the extract and the dose, as long as you will take it every day.
Saffron supplement benefits: what the research shows
1. A better mood
This is saffron's strongest evidence. A 2019 meta-analysis of 23 studies in Nutrition Reviews found a large positive effect of saffron on depressive symptoms compared with placebo, while noting signs of publication bias. Crucially, the effect is not limited to clinical patients. In healthy adults with low mood, 28mg a day of Affron® improved mood over 4 weeks, and in a 2025 trial of 202 adults, 28mg a day improved low mood over 12 weeks. More in saffron for mood.
2. Less stress and anxiety
The same meta-analysis found a large effect on anxiety symptoms, and the 4-week Affron® trial found improvements in stress and anxiety alongside mood. Unlike many calming ingredients, saffron does not sedate you. See saffron for anxiety.
3. Better sleep quality
In adults with self-reported poor sleep, 14mg of Affron® twice a day improved sleep quality ratings over 28 days compared with placebo, with no reported side effects. Saffron is not a sedative; the benefit appears to come from a calmer baseline.
4. PMS and menopause-related mood
In women with PMS, 30mg of saffron a day relieved premenstrual symptoms over two cycles, and in perimenopausal women, 14mg of Affron® twice a day reduced anxiety and depression scores over 12 weeks.
5. Fewer snack cravings
A different extract, Satiereal®, at 176.5mg a day, reduced snacking in mildly overweight women over 8 weeks. That is a separate extract and dose from the mood research.
6. Antioxidant compounds
Crocins, crocetin, and safranal have antioxidant properties in laboratory studies. This is a supporting benefit, not the main reason to take saffron, and human evidence centers on mood.
How much saffron per day?
The research lands on 28 to 30mg of standardized saffron extract a day. The dose matters: in the 4-week Affron® trial, 28mg improved mood while 22mg did not. Saffron threads are a different thing; roughly 15 to 20 threads weigh about 30mg, but that is 30mg of spice with unknown potency, not 30mg of measured extract. See how much saffron per day and how many saffron threads equal 30mg.
How long does a saffron supplement take to work?
Saffron builds over weeks, not hours. The trials measured benefits after 4 to 12 weeks of daily use, and most people should give it 2 to 6 weeks of consistency before judging. The full week-by-week picture is in how long saffron takes to work.
Saffron supplement side effects
At the studied doses, saffron is well tolerated, and the trials above reported side effects similar to placebo. A toxicology review concluded that therapeutic doses of saffron show no significant toxicity. Very large amounts are another matter. Talk to your doctor before taking saffron if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take an antidepressant (saffron acts on serotonin), take blood pressure medication or blood thinners, or have bipolar disorder. Capsules, drinks, gummies, or tea?
| Format | Measured dose? | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Saffron tea or water | No | Unknown potency cup to cup; lovely ritual, unreliable dose |
| Gummies | Sometimes | Unnamed extracts and added sugar |
| Capsules | Yes, if standardized | Daily pill fatigue; some carry saffron only |
| Drink mix | Yes, if standardized | Proprietary blends that hide doses |
Whatever the format, the rules are the same. See drink mix vs pills.
How to choose a saffron supplement
- A named, standardized extract such as Affron®, not just "saffron powder." See Affron vs regular saffron.
- 28 to 30mg of that extract a day, the dose from the trials.
- Every dose on the label, with no proprietary blends.
- Supporting ingredients at real doses, not sprinkled in for the label.
- No sugar or stimulants, so you feel the saffron, not a sugar or caffeine spike.
- A format you will take every day, because saffron rewards consistency.
When to take saffron
Most people take saffron in the morning or early afternoon with food, and the trials often split the dose across the day. Saffron is not sedating, so daytime use is fine. What matters most is taking it at the same time every day. More in when to take saffron.
Mood Mod: the saffron supplement built on the research
We built Mood Mod because we could not find a saffron supplement that checked every box above. Every stick delivers:
- 30mg Affron®, the clinically studied saffron extract, at the full studied dose
- 200mg L-theanine, the dose from a trial where L-theanine reduced stress-related symptoms in healthy adults, for calm focus the same day
- 100mg magnesium glycinate for the physical side of stress
- B6, B12, and electrolytes, with 0g sugar and no caffeine
It is an orange cream drink you stir into water, the easiest way we know to take the studied dose of saffron every single day. See exactly why we chose these doses in saffron, L-theanine, and magnesium together.
The full clinical dose of saffron, plus L-theanine and magnesium glycinate, in one caffeine-free, sugar-free drink. That is Mood Mod.
Try Mood Mod, 10% offThe bottom line
Saffron supplements have some of the strongest evidence of any natural ingredient for mood, with good research for stress, anxiety, sleep, and PMS as well. The keys are a standardized extract, 28 to 30mg a day, and daily use for several weeks. Get those right and saffron is one of the most worthwhile supplements you can take.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of saffron supplements?
Saffron's best-researched benefits are a better mood and less stress and anxiety, with good evidence for sleep quality and for PMS and menopause-related mood. A different saffron extract, Satiereal, has been studied for reducing snacking.
What does saffron do for the body?
Saffron's compounds, mainly crocins and safranal, are thought to act on brain chemistry involved in mood, including serotonin. In clinical trials, that showed up as improved mood, less anxiety, and better sleep quality at 28 to 30mg of extract a day.
How much saffron should I take a day?
The research uses 28 to 30mg of standardized saffron extract a day. In one trial, 28mg improved mood while 22mg did not, so the full studied dose matters.
Is it safe to take saffron every day?
At the studied doses, yes for most healthy adults. The trials used daily dosing for up to 12 weeks with side effects similar to placebo. Talk to your doctor first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or take an antidepressant, blood pressure medication, or blood thinners.
How long does it take for a saffron supplement to work?
Saffron builds over weeks. The clinical trials measured benefits after 4 to 12 weeks of daily use, so give it at least 2 to 6 weeks of consistent use.
What is the best form of saffron supplement?
The best form is one with a named, standardized extract such as Affron at 28 to 30mg a day, no sugar, and every dose disclosed, in a format you will take daily. Capsules and drinks carry standardized extracts most reliably; tea cannot guarantee a dose.
What is Crocus sativus?
Crocus sativus is the saffron crocus, a purple flower whose three red stigmas are dried to make saffron. Saffron supplements are made from extracts of these stigmas.
